i'm not sure my purse is full enough. lunch, laptop, book, sandals {because who wants to wear heels at the end of the day?} and then the ordinary purse stuff like wallet, glasses case...etc. i'm beginning to understand the rolling-bags...
words: choosing joy & plucking the day
i read a piece about carpe diem recently. the author, a remarkably honest, insightful woman, pointed out that constantly trying to seize the day was stressful. so stressful that it took the joy out of the day. she talked it out on paper, explaining the difference between real time - chronos - and what she called "god time" - kairos - but what i'll just call true time. she decided that she wasn't going to try to carpe diem, but rather she would carpe a few kairos moments a day. and really, i have to agree. which is to say, i believe we don't have to soak up every day, all day.
as i talked this over with boyfriend, he told me that his high school latin teacher believe that the translation of carpe as "to seize" was too violent, that the phrase was better translated as "to pluck". while it doesn't have quite the same oomph as a life motto, i think it has a more realistic message when understood that way. every single moment doesn't have to be enjoyed like we've missed the boat if we aren't reveling in each second of each hour. it's okay to just live. because when we're just living, we'll find that moments of marvel happen organically. we'll pluck them out of the day. and maybe, just maybe, those singular moments of marveling are all that we need to do, all that it takes to cherish this life. maybe basking in those moments of sunshine is the real meaning of carpe diem.
a few years ago, i decided to choose joy. to recognize the beauty in an ordinary moment. i think these two ideas, choosing joy and plucking the kairos moments, are essentially the same thing. it's about finding a balance - seeing the beautiful in the brutal truths of life. so i will keep choosing joy. and i will bask in the kairos moments. and i will love, because love is what makes it all possible.

finally settled on a place for my london calendar! loving it. love that it's hanging from something substantial, instead of pushpins. love that i have a shelf to display more photos on. love that the calendar is displayed, instead of hidden away in a drawer. also loved the mini-adventure of figuring out where to hang it, which involved dad spending lots of time scanning my walls with the stud-finder and mom spending lots of time watching TLC wedding dress shows. teamwork, people.

sat through the olympic gymnastics exposition with m&d and gma. there were so many ways to describe it...a gym session dropped into a vegas club? an acid trip with gymnastic moments? {not that i have any idea what that would be like, just drawing from my experiences watching across the universe.} maybe an 80s music video with some flips? don't get me wrong, i'm in awe of what gymnasts can do. but having spent countless hours watching my brother and his friends perform incredible feats of strength, i was a little disappointed by the abundance of dance/cheer routines and awkward skits, and the lack of actual gymnastics. also, no joke, some girls danced around with big white balls. i plan on being a supportive parent, but i'm pretty sure i might have to draw the line if my kid comes to me someday and says, "hey mom, my life dream is to dance around with a white ball." unless, of course, they've already talked to cirque de soleil and are booked for their next extravaganza. then it's all good.

slow day. took some time to just be, before getting anything done. it was much needed, the time spent soothing my soul with slow sips of coffee and thought-provoking words from women around the web. wrapped it all up with a bike ride to dinner to watch the irish win over michigan state!

pretty sweater. on a hot day. yahoo. also glasses. because, y'know. LASIK and law school don't always get along. can't complain too much though, considering i only really need them for driving now, whereas before, well...unless you were in extreme violation of my personal space, i wasn't really sure what you looked like. so. improvement accepted!

not cute, i know. but. started running again! not quite sure why i started on what feels like the muggiest of weeks we've had all summer, but... yeah. no. there's no clever colloquialism that explains that choice. but a water view sure does help when i start questioning my choices... :)

freshly painted frames, doing their thing on the wall {they are intentionally placed to hide an electrical box and some wall outlets, and let me tell you, they are a whole lot easier on the eye!}

exercise tip-jar...the idea came from pinterest with the purpose of motivating exercise, but since i'm actually doing alright with motivation {shocking, i know}, i'm also using it as a way to encourage myself with budgeting and intentional spending!
